We decided to check out Idaho’s only hands-on science center – The Discovery Center of Idaho. We’ve driven by it a million times but never been inside. It’s located downtown right next door to Julia Davis Park and walking distance to Zoo Boise. It always comes up as one of the best family-friendly things to do in Boise, Idaho so I’m glad we finally had the chance to visit. It was a great way to spend the afternoon off of school and so much fun!
The current featured exhibit is called Exquisite Creatures and it truly is just that – exquisite. Honestly, insects, birds and snakes give me the heebie-jeebies but this exhibit gave me a whole new perspective on them. This description of the exhibit from the Center’s website sums it up perfectly:
“Exquisite Creatures is an artistic experience that unravels humanity’s intimate relationship with the natural world. Artist, naturalist and New York Times bestselling author Christopher Marley reveals the obscure beauty in nature through his three-dimensional work with animal, mineral and plant specimens.”
Children of all ages will have the best time going from frame to frame to point out different creatures and marvel at their crazy unique colors, patterns and designs. Again, I really am NOT a huge creature lover but there were so many pieces that I’d happily hang in my house because they were so incredible! My pictures don’t do the work justice AT ALL. You’re going to be blown away when you see it in person.

After we had made our way through the Exquisite Creatures exhibit we had a fun time with all of the hands-on activities that were set up in the interactive exhibits Matter Splatter (aimed at older kids) and Young Learners (for little kids) exhibits. There were great things for kids of all ages. (Although my 4 and 6.5 year old had fun with these activities I do think that older kids would get the most out of them.)
There is a little TINKER THE T REX exhibit on your way out and it is also super fun!
