Safa Suleiman's Storytime- Hilwa's Gifts
December 6, 20251:00 pm – 2:00 pm 1576 W Grove St Boise, ID 83702
SAFA SULEIMAN – STORYTIME – HILWA’S GIFTS
Rediscovered Books Family Storytime is pleased to host author Safa Suleiman for Hilwa’s Gifts. Join us for Safa’s reading of her book, fun crafts, and a chance to meet the author.
Books will be available for sale and Safa will be signing them after the event.
About the Book:
A heartwarming picture-book debut brings a tradition many thousands of years old–harvesting and pressing olives into oil–vividly to life, showing how customs unite us across time and space.
Ali has arrived in Palestine for a visit just in time for the olive harvest. His grandfather, Seedo, and Hilwa–his favorite tree–greet him in the grove, where Seedo explains that Hilwa has many gifts to share. Other family members whack the trees’ branches with sticks, singing “Zaytoon, ya zaytoon” while cousins clap and dance and happily pick up fallen olives. (Luckily, a gentle whack is all it takes for Hilwa’s fruits to rain down!) The next day, at the olive press, Ali watches the drip of gold liquid into a can, another of Hilwa’s gifts. Later, they picnic under the tree’s branches with hot mint tea, pita, and delicious olive oil swirled on hummus. Tradition is the greatest gift of all: the family gathering–generation after generation–to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Dynamic illustrations and a graceful text peppered with Arabic words, plus a glossary and author’s note, make for an intimate picture-book debut about a child discovering his heritage.
About the Author:
Safa Suleimanis a Palestinian American educator with more than twenty years of experience in undergraduate and elementary school pedagogy. She is the author of Hilwa’s Gifts, which received a starred review from Booklist, calling it “an absolute treasure,” and Ameena’s Special Thobe which will be released by Candlewick Press in Spring 2027. She lives with her family in Colorado on the homeland of the Ute Nation.

Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway w/ Boise Bicycle Project
December 13, 20259:00 am – 5:00 pm Boise Bicycle Project, 1027 S Lusk Street, Boise, ID 83706
Since 2007, BBP has hosted the Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway, providing more than 600 “dream bikes” each December to kids in our community who might not otherwise have one!
Here’s how the process works: our referral partners (local nonprofits, charities, after-school programs, and government organizations) connect us with families in need and help identify kids who could use a bike. Each child then gets to draw a picture of their dream bike. While we collect these drawings, our community donates kids bikes, which our team and volunteers repair, tune up, and decorate to match each child’s drawing.
We can’t do this every year without our community getting involved! You can support the Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway by:
– Donating a kids bike to the Boise Bicycle Project in October or November – Volunteering at the event – Making a financial donation – Adopting a dream bike between December 1st – 12th
