Most people probably think of Bogus Basin as a winter destination, but it’s one of our family’s favorite “day trips” from Boise during the summer. Just 45 minutes from downtown, you’ll find cooler temperatures, hiking trails, live music, mountain adventures, and plenty to do whether you want to spend $0 or make a full day of it.

Let’s break down some options!
Take a Hike
Bogus is free to wander around. You don’t have to pay to park or hop on one of the trails. There are trails for a variety of ability levels, making it easy to find something that’s kid-friendly. Don’t forget water, sunscreen, and good “hiking” shoes, and remember many trails are shared with mountain bikers.
Set Up Camp for a Few Hours
There is a wonderful patio and large grassy area in front of the main lodge that’s perfect for spreading out with blankets or lawn chairs. Throughout the summer, Bogus Basin hosts free live music there, making it an easy place to spend an afternoon. You’ll find Music on the Patio on many weekend afternoons, plus select Music on the Mountain concerts featuring regional artists. Be sure to check the current events calendar before you head up since the schedule changes throughout the season.
Grab a Bite to Eat, a Cold Drink, or a Tasty Treat
The Double R Ranch BBQ Smokehouse has lots of treats from smoked meats, to ice cream, to beer. Bogus Creek Grill, located on the main floor of the J.R. Simplot Lodge, has plenty of snacks and meal options. You can also grab a variety of drinks from J.R.’s T-Bar or coffee drinks from JoJo Beans, also inside the J.R. Simplot Lodge.

Try a Fun Activity
There are activities for every age and adventure level, including The Mineshaft Challenge Course , the famous Glade Runner Mountain Coaster, the Sourdough Slider (summer tubing), the Launch Pad (bungee/trampoline jump), the Stack Rock (32 foot climbing wall), the Shafer Butte Mining Co. (panning sluice), scenic chair lift rides, mountain biking and the Basin Gravity Park. If you and/or your kids need to rent bikes or other equipment, they’ve got plenty!
Check Out a Bogus Basin Event
The calendar is packed with special events throughout the summer. From live music and family activities to races and community events, there’s almost always something happening on the weekends.
One thing I love about visiting Bogus Basin is that it’s a nonprofit recreation area, so spending time (and money) on the mountain helps support year-round outdoor recreation opportunities for our community.
Whether you’re looking for an inexpensive afternoon in the mountains or a full day packed with adventure, Bogus Basin is one of the easiest family day trips from Boise. Pack up the car, enjoy the cooler temperatures, and make some summer memories together!
