Big Brothers Big Sisters: Empowering Our Kids, How You Can Help

Written by Angela Sanchez, Big Brothers Big Sisters Idaho

As parents, we all want the best for our kids. We want them to grow up feeling supported, confident, and capable of tackling anything life throws their way. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, they need a little extra guidance. That’s where Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho (BBBS) comes in.

What BBBS Does

Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs children (Littles) with adult mentors (Bigs) to create positive, meaningful relationships. These relationships can make a world of difference to a child. BBBS is for ALL kids, not just those facing extra adversities. Every child can benefit from having another caring adult in their life!

Whether it’s a fun outing, help with homework, or simply someone to talk to, Bigs are there to support and guide their Littles. It’s about creating strong, long-lasting bonds that help kids navigate challenges and build confidence.

How Mentoring Benefits Kids and the Community

BBBS is more than just a mentoring program. It’s a proven way to help kids develop self-esteem, improve school performance, and improve mental health. Research shows that Littles involved in the program are more likely to stay out of trouble, do better academically, and feel more connected to their community. Everyone deserves to have someone in their corner cheering them on, and for many kids, their Big is that person.

But it’s not just the Littles who benefit. The entire community thrives when kids are supported. By helping our children succeed, BBBS is contributing to a healthier, more positive environment for all of us. Strong, confident kids grow into adults who give back, creating a cycle of kindness and support.

How You Can Get Involved

Now, I know many of us are busy juggling a million things (because #life, right?). But there are still plenty of ways to get involved with BBBS of Southwest Idaho:

– Become a Big: If you have the time and heart, becoming a Big could be an incredible way to make a difference. It’s a chance to form a special bond with a child and be part of their support system.

– Support the Cause: Even if you can’t commit to being a mentor, you can still make a difference by contributing financially. Every donation helps to keep the program running and supports more kids in our community.

– Spread the Word: Let other families know about BBBS. You never know who might have the time or resources to make an impact, or whose child could benefit.

As parents, we know how impactful a loving, supportive figure can be in a child’s life. With Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Idaho, we have the opportunity to extend that same support to kids who need it. Let’s rally together and give our children, and our community, the support they deserve.
